Dave Bautista Nears Deal to Play Kratos in Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Dave Bautista may be the next actor to bring Kratos to life in film and television. Sources close to Variety have revealed that Bautista is currently in talks to star as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action series adaptation of God of War.

This decision follows a severe injury sustained by Ryan Hurst. Hurst, who was cast in the role in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep during filming, delaying his return to set until 2027. Consequently, Amazon and Sony were forced to recast the role to keep the project on track, with executives aiming to resume principal photography by this autumn.

Dave Bautista represents an ideal choice for Kratos. Beyond his acting caliber, he is one of the few Hollywood performers capable of quickly achieving the imposing physical stature required for the character without needing months of intensive physical transformation. Furthermore, he shares a successful working relationship with Amazon, having starred in Prime Video projects such as The Wrecking Crew and My Spy.

Having first risen to global fame in professional wrestling (WWE), Bautista successfully built a versatile acting career. He portrayed Drax the Destroyer across six Marvel Cinematic Universe films and appeared in Denis Villeneuve’s first two Dune installments, Blade Runner 2049, Spectre, and Army of the Dead.

Prime Video has issued a two-season order for God of War. Based on the two most recent video game installments, the series follows Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, as they navigate the realm of Norse mythology. According to the official synopsis: “Father and son embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Along the adventure, Kratos strives to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus tries to show his father how to be a better human.”

Callum Vinson remains attached as Kratos’s son, Atreus. The ensemble cast also features Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with Frederick E.O. Toye set to direct the first two episodes.
